According to the journalists, media researchers and a video by the Independent Journalism Center presented at the Annual Press Club Gala, the year 2018 was a complicated one for the independent media or the media inconvenient to those at power.
Journalists took ‘lessons’ from dignitaries and other government officials about how to do their job. ‘Leave the area!’, ‘Do not shoot!’, ‘Access to journalists is restricted!’ or even ‘It’s a state institution and you aren’t allowed to shoot!’ were the leitmotifs of the year.
From Speaker Andrian Candu, media representatives learned that ‘these people (i.e. journalists) do nothing but write drafts to get foreign funding and consume that money’. The statement was made during the Press Freedom Days.
Prime Minister Pavel Filip was also worried this year that some TV channels have turned into ‘video departments of some party formations’. The Prime Minister did not offer explanations in this regard.
Ilan Shor, Orhei Mayor, who threatened the journalists repeatedly, calling them with indecent phrases, was also featured by the video. Businessman’s behaviour was also taken over by the Deputy Chair of ‘Shor’ Party, Marina Tauber, who chased the journalists present at a party event with a broom.
Restricting access to information was also a routine of this year. For instance, TV8 and Jurnal TV journalists were denied the access to the Democratic Party’s headquarters. The party spokespersons’ arguments that the access was denied due to the editorial policy of these TV channels explain how authorities understand the role of the media in a society.
The video ends with a moment of silence for this year’s late journalists – Boris Iarusevschi, Nicolae Raileanu, Valerii Corcimari, and Sergiu Gavrilita.
