In a press-release, the Liberal Reformatory Party (LRP) proposes that 80% of televised advertising and teleshopping appear in Romanian, and only 20% – in other languages. Also, if advertising is in other languages, the party wants compulsory subtitles in Romanian.
At the same time, the LRP proposes that 80% of televisions and radio stations retransmitted on the territory of Moldova be broadcast in Romanian, under an authorization for retransmission. In addition, the channels retransmitted in other languages should contain subtitles.
“Providers of television and radio services, the majority of whom are private businesses, provide such services in other languages than the official language of Moldova, which does not happen in other countries, where up to 100% of such services are provided in the official language of the country,” the authors of the initiative mentioned, specifying that their action is indented to protect the information space of Moldova.
LRP representatives also added that they are seeking the implementation of this initiative especially since, in their opinion, the televisions and radio stations retransmitted in Russian are often used as direct means of propaganda.
A similar provision is also contained in the draft decision of the Broadcasting Coordinating Council (BCC). Near the end of last year BCC members asked that at least 50% of the stations retransmitted by providers be in Romanian and other 50% come from the member states of the European Convention on Transfrontier Television.
