The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Requested Moldovan Authorities to Ensure the Security of Journalists ‘in the Context of Country’s Current Political Developments’

On Wednesday, 12 June, Harlem Désir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media came up with a Public Call for the authorities from the Republic of Moldova and urged them to ensure safe working conditions for journalists.

‘Journalists must be able to do their work, including during demonstrations and public actions, freely and without intimidation or violence’, mentioned Harlem Désir. ‘I call on the authorities to ensure journalists’ safety. This is especially important in the context of the country’s current political developments.’

The appeal also states that, according to reports by media outlets and NGOs, ‘several members of the media, including Agora.md, Unimedia.info and Anticorupţie.md media portals, Pro TV and TV 8 channels, and Ziarul de Garda investigative reporting newspaper, were affected and obstructed in various incidents between 7 and 9 June’.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media made this call after variousmedia NGOs in the Republic of Moldova notified on Monday, 10 June, the embassies and international media outlets – Reporters Without Borders, Freedom House, IFEX, SEEMO, SEEMP about the case of assault against journalists during the protests of 7-9 June, this year, organised by the Democratic Party.
