Vlad Ţurcanu has been proposed to the Parliament to be appointed as general director of the public company Teleradio-Moldova (TRM), according to trm.md. Six of the seven members of the TRM’s Supervisory and Development Board (SDB) voted for his candidacy during the first meeting on November 29.

The information has been confirmed for trm.md by Sergiu Stanciu, member and secretary of the SDB. According to Stanciu, Vlad Ţurcanu’s candidacy was proposed by the SDB President Arcadie Gherasim. The latter has been elected today as president of SDB by unanimous vote. Although trm.md published news on this topic, the information did not appear in the section dedicated to announcements of meetings.

According to moldovacurata.md, Vlad Țurcanu worked at Teleradio-Moldova between 1992 and 1999, and then became the marketing director at Radio Contact. Between 2001 and 2004 he worked at Radio Free Europe, after which, for two years, he was an expert in communication in two medical projects of the European Commission. Between 2006 and 2008 he was a member of the Broadcasting Coordinating Council.

In 2009, Țurcanu was director of development at the media program of the American institute IREX, and in 2010 – deputy director of Mir TV representative office in Moldova.

In 2012 he became a spokesman for former President Nicolae Timofti. At the time of his appointment, Țurcanu was editor-in-chief of Radio Chisinau. He resigned from office in 2016, after the Filip Government took the oath in a ceremony that had not been publicly announced. According to Free Europe, Țurcanu had claimed that he unwittingly misinformed the media when he declared that the oath taking would take place another day. “I made statements for three television stations about the postponement of oath taking for another day. That was the official position until 22.00. As you know, it was later decided that the oath should be taken yesterday evening. Not knowing about it, I misinformed, which is not democratic,” the then-presidential adviser said, cited by the IPN news agency.

In August 2019, Vlad Țurcanu was appointed head of the Liberal Reformist Party, renamed to Romanian Popular Party. That year, he ran for the position of general mayor of Chisinau municipality from that party and obtained 0.81% of the votes in the election. In December that year he announced he was leaving the party “due to differences in vision regarding how the Romanian political spectrum should be strengthened in Moldova.” He said he chose “collaboration with the team of Octavian Țîcu and Viorel Iordăchescu.” At the beginning of 2020, Vlad Țurcanu was elected as the first vice-president of the National Unity Party (PUN) led by the ex-MP Octavian Țîcu. In November that year he left the PUN and announced he was retiring from politics.

Vlad Ţurcanu holds a degree in Journalism and Communication Sciences from the State University of Moldova.

According to the new amendments to the Code of Audiovisual Media Services, the general director of the national public provider of media services is appointed by the Parliament at the proposal of the Supervisory and Development Board. The general director is appointed by Parliament decision, and if the proposed candidate is rejected, the SDB shall propose another candidate within 15 days from the day of rejection.
