The MFF submitted the respective application to the BC at the end of November 2021. The MFF asked the BC to issue the broadcasting license for WE SPORT TV station, whose program services are to be broadcast through the networks of the country’s service distributors in thematic format, focused on sports. According to the editorial project of the station, its administration aims to have 95% of its own production and 5% of promotion, advertising and teleshopping.
Alexandru Grecu, MFF representative and responsible for the media project, said that the television will be supported by its partners. “As you know, we have some very solid partners, such as FIFA [Fédération Internationale de Football Association] and UEFA [Union of European Football Associations], two important global organizations with solid budgets. Respectively, we requested funding for such a project in case we obtain a broadcasting license from the BC. We are to set a budget with them, depending on the programs we will be making in the future,” Alexandru Grecu said.
According to him, the MFF has a prior agreement with the mentioned organizations. In addition, he said, local partners, such as Moldtelecom, also showed willingness to support the television, including by granting an advantageous position in the television listings.
“Pluralism, of course, is very important, but media diversity is also important and, by today’s positive decision, we will contribute to ensuring diversity, because a new niche station will appear. I underline that it is very important to promote the healthy way of life and championships. I will vote for it. And on a somewhat personal and sentimental note, I think the late Efim Josan [sports journalist] would have been very happy with today’s decision. I would dedicate this decision to him,” said the BC president Liliana Vițu.
By unanimous vote, the association obtained the broadcasting license for a term of nine years.
The Moldovan Football Federation was founded in 1990 and is an affiliate member of UEFA (since 1993) and FIFA (since 1994). The president of the MFF is Leonid Oleinicenco. The first sports television station in Moldova, Moldova Sport, was launched in 2014. Three years later, the station was transformed into the general-themed station Impact TV, after it went through several financially difficult periods.
Also, the current members of the BC rejected the request of the company KSA Media Pro for a license for the station Free TV, having been rejected by former BC members, too. The current members said that the station’s representatives failed to convince them of the transparency of media ownership and the sustainability of the project.
