The draft law on modifying and supplementing the Law on Access to Information (Articles 15, 16) and the Contraventions Code of the Republic of Moldova (Article 71) has been registered in the Moldovan Parliament as a legislative initiative of a group of MPs.

The draft was registered on 27 June this year under number 249 by five MPs of the Liberal Reformatory Party: Vladimir Saharneanu, Vadim Vacarciuc, Oleg Bodrug, Vadim Cojocaru and Ion Hadarca.

According to the procedure, before being discussed in the plenum of the Parliament, the document is to receive conclusions of parliamentary committees and of the Government of Moldova.

The draft law aims at improving the process of registration of requests for access to information, reducing time limits for provision of information, and upgrading penalties for failure to comply with the legislation on access to information for persons responsible for providing information.

Proposals in the new draft law were formulated on the basis of the study Mass Media Access to Information in Moldova: Problems and Perspectives, produced by the Independent Journalism Center experts as part of the project on Strengthening the Legal Framework regulating Mass Media in Moldova, implemented with the financial support of Civil Rights Defenders, Sweden.
