In Moldova, women earn MDL 647 per month less than men, meaning that for the work she does, a woman gets a salary that is about 87% of the payment offered to a man. It is the conclusion of the Statistical Portrait of Men and Women in Moldova, produced by the National Statistics Bureau in 2017.
Salary differences are explained by the fact that women work in spheres where payment is lower. Another reason is that they do not negotiate and accept poorly paid jobs easier, and sometimes women agree to work off the books.
In addition to accepting less paid jobs, women take on even more responsibility for household chores and care for children.
Also, because of the responsibilities they have at home, some women cannot take on more duties at work or to do longer hours when needed, which prevents them from advancing in their careers and, therefore, from getting better jobs.
The fields with significant salary differences and the solutions proposed by specialists are discussed in the new episode of the “Divided by Two” [Romanian “Împărțit la doi”] show.

IJC has been producing the cycle of shows “Divided by Two” since April, aiming to bring to the attention of the general public the multiple aspects of gender issues and to present positive models of involvement of men and women in various spheres of life. All the programs produced so far can be found on the IJC portal www.moldova-azi.md in the sections of Shows.

The “Divided by Two” shows are produced as part of the ”Media for Gender Balance” campaign implemented by the Independent Journalism Center with the financial support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency through the Embassy of Sweden in Chisinau.
