The Broadcasting Council (BC) decided during its meeting on 21 January to monitor the main newscasts of 13 TV channels during the election campaign in terms of the observance of the electoral legislation on the coverage of the election campaign during the Parliamentary Elections and the Republican Referendum of 24 February 2019.

The list includes Moldova 1, TV8, Prime, Publika TV, Canal 2, Canal 3, Accent TV, NTV Moldova, PRO TV Chisinau, Jurnal TV, RTR Moldova, Orhei TV and Central Television.

The BCC member Artur Cozma wanted to find out the criteria on the basis of which these TV channels were selected for monitoring. As an answer, the BC Chair Dragos Vicol explained that, first of all, they took into account the list of TV channels with national coverage, and second – the TV channels that have newscasts ‘covering the whole spectrum of socio-political events’ and the most representative channels with ‘stronger opinions, regardless of their vision’.

The BC will also monitor these channels in terms of the observance of Council’s decision on the access of people with hearing and visual impairments to the audiovisual program services.
