Independent Journalism Centre(IJC) continues the initiatives of promotion of media education. In this context, the study " The development of media culture can take place within suitable media education" done by Ph.D. Loretta Handrabura was launched on Thursday, June 23. The work was presented during a workshop in which the Minister of Education, Corina Fusu, the director of IJC, Nadine Gogu, the representatives of the departments of education, teachers from the pre-university educational institutions and media experts participated.
The study analyses the local and international practices regarding the teaching of media education in schools. Besides getting familiar with the research, those present were involved in a panel of discussions during which they commented on the exposed ideas and recommended the continuation of the activities in this field. The work synthesizes everything that has been done till this moment in Moldova in the field of media education, both at the theoretical and practical level.

The first mentions about the necessity of media education appeared in the journal of theory and educational practice "Didactica Pro" and in a research done by Silvia Spac. In a practical way, the first initiatives of promotion of media education belong to the Independent Journalism Centre, followed by some other projects implemented by other non-governmental organizations. For a comparative analysis, four countries with a roughly similar social and economic situation to that of Moldova, which have practice of implementation of media education in the pre-university education, have been chosen. They are Romania, the Ukraine, Armenia and the Russian Federation whose experience of promotion of media education, both through different projects and through practice of the educational system, could be taken and adapted to the needs and specifics of our country.

The conclusions and the recommendations were various. They supported the necessity to involve not only teachers, but also parents in this field. They also proposed that media education begins from the kindergarten, to develop in children critical thinking and teach them not to succumb to manipulation from young age. We also have to take into account that the Republic of Moldova is being in an information war in which both the inland and foreign press are involved. In the teachers' opinion a curriculum has to be developed, so that certain hours of media education to be introduced in other disciplines, for example for the primary forms at the lessons of moral and spiritual education, but for the gymnasium and high school at the lessons of civic education.Daniela Vacarciuc, the principal of high schoool "Vasile Alecsandri" from Chisinau recommended as a short term solution to organize a campaign with the participation of ten pilot educational institutions which will have classes of media education and at the same time work on the development of the curriculum and the identification of the disciplines during which this new subject will be taught. Natalia Grau, a superior consultant at the Ministry of Education mentioned that the ministry is open to discuss these ideas and analyse them further in a larger format with the participation of more specialists from the ministry.

The Independent Journalism Centre will continue to discuss with all the people involved in the process of media education to develop effective tools to suit the needs of all age categories.

This activity are realized as part of the “Strengthening Freedom of Expression in Moldova” project implemented by the Independent Journalism Center with the support of Deutsche Welle Academie and funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany.
