The Press Council scheduled three meetings to consult the addenda to the Code of Ethics for Moldovan journalists, that will take place during 16–24 April. Journalists, media managers, representatives of civil society and all interested individuals are invited to participate in the debate about proposals, that are to be presented during a round table on 3 May 2019, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
Proposals to supplement the Code of Ethics for Moldovan journalists were developed by a group of national and international experts of the ‘Freedom House’ organisation. Also, according to a press release published by the Press Council, a number of proposals from journalists, media managers, experts from different NGOs were sent to the Council by 10 April 2019.
Proposals refer to certain situations a journalist should evade in order to avoid conflicts of interest; develop provisions on certain journalistic topics featuring protagonists vulnerable to discrimination; target fake news, misinformation, manipulation, etc. Addenda also include a new chapter on the relationship between journalists and their employers.
The Press Council published completed version of the Code of Ethics and sent it via e-mail to the editorial offices of media outlets, requesting editorial offices and interested NGOs to examine proposed addenda and to formulate possible proposals to improve them.
Thus, three meetings were scheduled, during which the gathered proposals would be debated. The first round of public consultations with representatives of NGOs will take place on 16 April. The event will be held starting from 2.00 p.m. at the office of the Press Council Secretariat, on 41/5 Bucuresti street. On 19 April, consultations will continue with media professionals (journalists, managers, other staff of editorial offices). The meeting will be organised at the Summit Center on 49/3 Tighina street (Red Hall, 2.00 p.m.). At the third round of consultations, on 24 April, representatives of media associations and other media NGOs will meet. The debates will be conducted at the office of the Press Council Secretariat at 2.00 p.m.
After the public consultations, members of the expert group will draft final version of the addenda to the Code of Ethics for Moldovan journalists. They will present it at a round table on 3 May 2019, on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.
