IJC Agenda for February

In early February, the IJC will publish the top of the most open institutions, produced on the basis of a report assessing the process of opening public government data in 2013, as part of a project funded by the Soros-Moldova Foundation. By the end of the month, the IJC will organize a training program focused on correct coverage of topics on minorities and socially vulnerable groups for Transnistrian and Gagauz journalists. Also, a group of professors from the journalism departments of four universities will participate in the second workshop on the topic of Gender Coverage in Mass Media. They will analyze the content and structure of curriculums related to this topic, work on which they began in November 2013.

Beginning in February 2014, a group of journalists from Gagauzia will do internship in various media outlets in Chisinau, sharing experience with their fellow professionals. On 12 February, the Slovak Atlantic Commission, with the assistance of the Central European Policy Institute and in partnership with the IJC, will publish the conclusions of a survey on the Moldovans’ attitude towards the European Union and their perceptions of our country’s relations with the EU and Russia through the prism of values.

Also, this month will see the launch of the first interim publication of the project of monitoring press freedom in the countries of the Eastern Partnership (EaP), a contributor to which is the IJC: Media Landscape in the EaP space in 2013. The publication will present an ample picture of media realities in Moldova, as well as in Ukraine, Belarus, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and will end with a series of conclusions.

In addition, we will continue promoting the petition to the Parliament and monitoring signatures. On this occasion, we are appealing to you to read and sign it here, if have not done so yet!

Production of videos about successful women in various fields and work on the database with women as sources of information will be a priority of the Production and Campaigns Department. Both these activities are part of the project Changing the Perception on Women in Moldovan Society through Mass Media, funded by the Matra program.

The Media Law and Policy Department will present its report on the situation of mass media in 2013 and a study analyzing journalists’ access to information of public interest. The analysis will include viable solutions for optimizing communication between mass media and the institutions responsible for guaranteeing access to the information of public interest.

Also, it will continue monitoring the situation of mass media in Moldova, as well as the legislative initiatives and modifications in this respect. In addition, in February the team of the department will continue offering free legal assistance to media outlets and journalists.

During February, the students of the SAJ will discover the role of social journalism in national and international media. For 10 days students and trainers will be analyzing the specifics of social journalism, principles of topics, and will be having visits and meetings at governmental institutions whose activity is related to social policies. Over the following two weeks, as part of the course on Journalism on Economic Topics, students will be taught to cover interdisciplinary topics (social-economic, political-economic) and to develop a framework of economic thinking. At the end of the course every student will be able to write articles on economic topics, ensuring a good structure of materials and the balance of relevant sources.

Also, the Discussions Club meetings will continue on Tuesdays. Representatives of international organizations, politicians, NGO representatives, media managers and experts in various fields will hold informal discussions with students on current topics.
