”Media education plays a significant role in the empowerment of citizens”, this is one of the students’ opinions expressed during the  round table discussion ”Introduction of media education in the university curriculum: possibilities and tools for achievement”, organized by the Centre for Independent Journalism on June 13.
University lecturers, professors and experts in sciences of education, together with Valeryi Ivanov (director of Academy of Ukrainian press), Amalia Oganjanyan (lecturer within Tbilisi State University and representative of Deutsche Welle Akademie in Georgia) and the representatives of Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova discussed the need of introduction of the media education subject at different levels of education. The experts supported introduction of this subject at the first level of education, when the professor can contribute significantly to pupils training, so they could inform themselves correctly from many sources, distinguish manipulative materials and make a critical analysis of the press articles.

The importance of media education for pupils and students has been pointed out by the fact that it developed the critical, creative, identity spirit, which developed not only the consumers, but independent persons, as well, who could make correctly and consciously their own decisions.
In addition, one of the solutions proposed by the participants was the participation of parents in media education, too, because they have a very important role in their children’s education. On the other hand, the participants to the round table referred to current mass media quality and stated that if the reader must be responsible of the information he reads, the journalist should also be responsible towards his readers, when he publishes his materials.
Representatives of many higher education institutions from the country also participated in the event: Moldova State University, Free International University of Moldova,  European Studies University, Slavonic University, Comrat State University, Academy of Economic Studies, Pedagogical University” Ion Creanga”, Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu State University, Cahul, Technical University, as well as Institute of Education Sciences, Pro Didactica.
CIJ notes that the event will be followed by many activities (training programmes of media education, presentations with the same topic made by professors/students in schools) where many professors and students from other universities of the country will be involved.

The round table has been carried out within the project “Freedom of expression and media development in Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and South Caucasus", implemented by CIJ during the period May-September 2015, supported by Deutsche Welle Akademie and financed by German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development”.
