Journalist Marian Rata from the “Anticoruptie.md” portal has been nominated to the European Press Prize in the category of investigative journalism with the article “Anabolics Mafia. The Clandestine Road of Steroids from Moldova to Foreign Athletes.”
The article submitted for the contest was published in October 2016, and it tells about the production of anabolic steroids on the territory of Moldova and their road to the black markets of other European countries. The investigation was produced within the “Shining a Light on Corruption in Moldova” project conducted by the Journalistic Investigations Center and Freedom House with the financial support of the Foreign Ministry of the Kingdom of Norway. It should be noted that in 2016 this article took the first prize at the contest for best journalistic investigation on corruption, organized by the UNDP.
For the European Press Prize, Mariana Rata competes with reporters from The Guardian, Le Monde, Center for Investigative Journalism from Serbia, etc.
In 2017, journalists from 18 countries (Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Moldova, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Spain and the UK) were nominated to the European Press Prize in four categories: The Distinguished Writing Award, The Innovation Award, The Commentator Award and The Investigative Reporting Award. The winners will be announced in April 2017.
The European Press Prize has been awarded since 2012 and is considered as the “European Pulitzer”.
