22 students of "Constantin Spătaru" High-school from Leova discussed about news, manipulation and verification of media information in a new media literacy lesson organized by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC). The activity was moderated by Diana Railean, reporter of Radio "Free Europe".

"Just like when choosing a winter coat, you try out more models and you do not want to stop at the first sample that you see, the same you should do when reading the news. Do not believe only one media source, because you owe your mind the same respect as your body ", this is how the media literacy lesson started. D. Railean has also talked about how a news story should be written, what questions should a quality journalistic article give answer to and what are the methods through which certain media channels manipulate the audience.

The journalist highlighted the fact that most often misleading or biased information can be found in news bulletins, which are the most watched programs on TV, mentioning that in the online media many attempts of manipulation exist as well. According to the Public Opinion Barometer 2014, the most important source of information for Moldovan citizens remains television, but on the second place and constantly rising is the Internet, this is why, online users, especially young people, must be careful when navigating on news sites or social networks.

The journalist reminded the students that whenever having doubts about the accuracy of a news or whether a journalist followed the proffesional ethics, they can appeal to the Press Council to lodge a complaint.

The students have been pleasantly impressed by the attended activity.
Buza Tatiana, a student in the XIIth grade said: "It was a very interesting lecture, this information will be helpful in the future. I belong to the society and I understood that although I don’t directly participate in writing the news, I have the right to demand accurate information from the media."

Her colleague, Valentina Iorga added: "Media literacy for young people in Moldova is a very useful project. Day by day we face the problem of media manipulation. We, the young people, are the most prone to manipulation. Today I learned how to write a news story, but also how to check the veracity of news."

Artiom Bonar, student  in the XIth grade concluded: "I enjoyed talking to a real journalist and certainly, I will take into account the  lesson and advice received today. "

The event took place as part of the project “Promoting media literacy among Moldovan citizens”, implemented by the IJC between March 2014 and April 2015 with the financial support of the US Embassy in Moldova.
