The best journalists of the year were awarded prizes by the Independent Journalism Centre and the Press Freedom Committee on Friday, 16th of December 2016. A total number of 14 prizes in different categories, including 7 special prizes, were awarded at the XXII edition of the Gala “The Top Journalists of the Year 2016”.

Present at the event, the Ambassadress of Sweden to Moldova, Her Excellency, Ms Signe Burgstaller, emphasized the importance of increasing the efforts towards promoting and supporting the freedom of the media and the freedom of expression worldwide. “Continue the good work that you do and remain the best “watchdogs” you can be”, the ambassadress urged the journalists.

The ranking includes the journalists who, through their work performed in 2016, had a significant contribution to strengthening the independent, democratic and professional media in Moldova. The winners thanked the organizers of the contest, as well as the teams they belong to. The presenters asked them to address a message to Santa. “I would really like to bring together closer the day when we can say that the press in the Republic of Moldova is not degrading with the society”, stated Valentina Ursu from Radio Free Europe, winner of the trophy in Radio Journalism category.

“I would ask Santa to do so, that the Moldovan journalists do not underestimate themselves and understand that their power is extremely high; that they help each other, criticize in private and maybe also in public, and we could thus become better”, said Ana Sarbu, journalist at the website Agora.md, winner of the trophy in Online Journalism category.

“We should put efforts by ourselves in order to achieve what we wish in the new year”, recommended to his fellow journalists the winner in Photojournalism category, Igor Rotari from Unimedia.info

At the end of the event, Vasile Botnaru, director of Radio Free Europe, congratulated all this year’s finalists and conveyed an encouraging message to the attendants, pointing out, among other things: “Unfortunately, our job is ungrateful, but even in such conditions, there are people wanting to do this job …”.

The main purpose of the event was to support and encourage the journalists’ endeavours towards a quality press, adhering to international professional standards. The ranking includes journalists who, through their work done in 2016, greatly contributed to strengthening of the independent, democratic and professional media in the Republic of Moldova
