The Press Council Has a New Chairperson

The journalist Viorica Zaharia was elected as the chairwoman of the Press Council (PC). The decision was made by the new members of the Council at the first meeting conducted on Thursday, 24th of November 2016.
 
The meeting was attended by 7 out of the 9 members of the PC, one of them having delegated the vote to the PC Secretary, Petru Macovei. According to the attendants, the chairperson of the PC shall be someone who is familiar with the mass-media field, operates and masters the Journalist’s Code of Ethics. “Viorica Zaharia has these qualities altogether”, said Inga Burlacu, ombudswoman at the Association of Independent Press, PC member. The other colleagues unanimously supported the candidate Viorica Zaharia.

In their work, the PC members and chairperson are guided by the Regulations for the activity of the Press Council of Moldova, which set the following obligations for the chairperson: convoke the Council’s meetings; chair the meetings; sign the Council’s decisions; establish working groups to examine the complaints of the consumers of media products related to the publication of journalistic materials; sign reports and other information on the work of the Council; represent the Council in the relationship with other institutions.

To be noted that the following members, elected on the 26th of October 2016 for a two-year term, make up the new composition of the Press Council: Alina Ţurcanu, Viorica Zaharia, Iulia Semionova, Ecaterina Jekova, Dumitru Ţîra, Ludmila Andronic, Inga Burlacu, Olga Manole and Vitalie Zama.
