The Independent Journalism Center (IJC) and the Representatives of Civil Rights Defenders (CRD) in Moldova brought together a group of editors, media and journalism managers at the working lunch on Tuesday, May 17, to discuss the Universal Periodic Evaluation (UPE).
Alesia Vidruk, the Representative of CRD in the Republic of Moldova, told those present that UPE is a mechanism created 10 years ago in the UNO Council for Human Rights with the help of which the evaluation of public policies in the field of human right takes place in the countries of the world. The aim of UPE is to contribute at the elimination of all forms of discrimination and to make the authorities of the member states of UNO respect their commitments in the field of human rights.
During the XIX session of the UNO Council for Human Rights (2012), the Republic of Moldova was included for the first time in this international exercise. In autumn 2016, the authorities of Moldova will report to UNO about the situation of human rights and the way how those 122 recommendations made to our country by other states were realized during four years.
The host of the event, Nadine Gogu, the executive director of IJC provoked a discussion among the journalists about the way to reflect this topic in the media materials and the ways of approach in such a way that the exposed material is accessible and presents interest for the public at large.
The journalists were interested in the subject of the discussion, the UPE being a new international exercise for them. During the meeting the participants suggested ideas regarding the format to address the issues in such a way that this can have a bigger impact on the citizens, but also on the decision factors.
The journalists were also informed about a training in the field of universal periodic evaluation which will be organized by IJC in partnership with the representatives of CRD in Moldova on 26 May in Chisinau. The workshop will be addressed to journalists from the local and national press, including Transnistria and Gagauzia.
The IJC in partnership with CRD will start a national contest of articles/reports and programs on the topic of human rights in the Republic of Moldova, the fulfilment of commitments assumed by authorities during the international exercise - UPE. The winner of the contest will have the opportunity to take part at the Session of UNO Council for Human Rights wich will take place in Geneva (Switzeland) in autumn 2016 where the authorities of the Republic of Moldova will present the Report concerning the fulfilment of the recommendations of the countries of the world.
The working lunch took place with the support of the organization Civil Rights Defenders, Sweden, partner of IJC.
