Draft law on advertising voted in the first reading

The Parliament approved the draft law on advertising in the first reading. The initiative was supported by 53 MPs. The document, prepared by the experts of the Independent Journalism Center (IJC), was voted in the first reading three years ago, too, but did not have finality.

The current initiative largely transposes the text of the initial draft law, developed by the IJC experts.

The document regulates the establishment and implementation of the legal framework for messages of public interest, requirements for ensuring transparency in the advertising market, self-regulation in advertising, including political advertising in non-electoral periods, etc.

Among other things, the initiative provides for the establishment and implementation of the legal framework for political advertising in non-electoral periods, which does not currently exist, as well as the fact that payment for the services of dissemination of political advertising can only be made by bank transfer.

Previously, the head of the Parliamentary Commission for Economy, Budget and Finance and a co-author of the initiative, Dumitru Alaiba, said that MPs might adopt a new law on advertising by the end of the autumn session of this year.

The draft law is part of a broader IJC campaign focused on amending the Law on advertising and on improving the legal framework in the media field.
