The Draft of the New Broadcasting Code Was Submitted for Public Consultations

The draft of the new Broadcasting Code was submitted for public consultations, according to a press release of the Parliament’s Public Relations Department.

Being drafted by national and international experts within the working group on improvement of media legislation, the Code is aimed at bringing national legislation on the media in line with European standards.

The document has been renamed into the Code of Audiovisual Media Services of the Republic of Moldova, and it may be found on the website of the Parliament under the heading “Improvement of media legislation”.

All comments, suggestions and recommendations should be sent to the Commission on Culture, Education, Research, Youth, Sports, and the Media.

The U.S. Ambassador to Moldova James D. Pettit has recently called on early adoption of the new Broadcasting Code, encouraging Moldovan authorities to comply with EU standards in the field of radio and television.

At the same time, EU Ambassador Peter Michalko, the Head of the European Delegation to Moldova, stressed that prompt adoption of a new Broadcasting Code, compliant with the European Audiovisual Media Services Directive, as well as ensuring of freedom and pluralism of the media, are priorities in the cooperation between the European Union and Moldova, and they closely watched by the Delegation.

Earlier, Andrian Candu, the Speaker of the Parliament, noted that the draft code will be sent to the Venice Commission for examination.
