The anticorruption prosecution has finalized criminal investigation and sent to the Centru district Court a criminal case charging three employees of Penitentiary no. 13, Chisinau, with abuse of office in the case of journalist Vadim Ungureanu. The information came in a press release of the General Prosecutor’s Office on Friday, October 2.

Criminal investigation was initiated based on an application by Vadim Ungureanu, journalist for deschide.md, who complained about illegal actions of the Penitentiary Institutions Department (PID) employees. A year ago they detained him while he was obtaining personal data on several Moldovan artists from Dan Chirita, head of the Monitoring Center of the General Police Inspectorate. PID employees kept him illegally for three days at Penitentiary no. 13.

Following criminal investigation, prosecutors established that although the journalist should have been placed in a separate cell, he was kept together with five persons charged with particularly serious crimes. According to prosecution, penitentiary employees violated his rights and allowed psychological pressure.

In addition, to intimidate the journalist, the defendants organized on the territory of the penitentiary walks, movement, and discussions with unidentified persons interested in and affected by the information he had published, who used threats to force him to officially retract that information.

If the penitentiary employees are found guilty, they “risk a fine or imprisonment up to 3 years, in both cases with deprivation of the right to occupy certain positions or to practice certain activities for up to 5 years,” the General Prosecutor’s Office press release says.
