Media NGOs are expressing concern about the detention of reporter Vadim Ungureanu and the searches conducted in the office of the news portal deschide.md.

Today, 20 June 2014, the office of deschide.md has been searched by the Ministry of Interior employees, and reporter Vadim Ungureanu has been detained for 72 hours. The reason for detention, according to the data of the General Police Inspectorate, is the reporter having allegedly blackmailed a public official to obtain personal information about several persons representing the world of art and culture.

The portal’s editorial office believes that these actions of the Ministry of Interior have been revenge for publication of some journalistic investigations about alleged violations committed by the Ministry of Interior leadership and employees.

We are asking the Ministry of Interior for maximum clarity, objectivity, fairness and transparency in the case concerning reporter Vadim Ungureanu. Also, we are asking for compliance with the principles of the rule of law and the current legislation and for refraining from intimidation of media outlets and journalists in relation with their professional activities.
